You’ve booked your Narrowboat Day Hire on the Grand Union Canal.
You’ve packed the sandwiches.
You’ve even bought a slightly embarrassing captain's hat.
But now you’re looking at a 7-hour slot and wondering:
What exactly do we do all day?
Do we just drive in a straight line until we hit the sea? (Please don’t). Do we stop every five minutes?
To help you squeeze every drop of relaxation out of your Grand Union Canal day out, we’ve put together a sample narrowboat day hire itinerary. Think of this as your loose guide to a perfect day afloat—no stress, no rushing, and definitely no speeding (mostly because the boat won't let you).
Here’s a relaxed, realistic Narrowboat Day Hire itinerary for a perfect day on the Grand Union Canal in Hertfordshire.
09:00 AM: Arrival & The "Don't Panic" Briefing
Arrive at the Cow Roast Marina near Tring with a smile, ready for your Grand Union Canal adventure. The first order of business is the handover.
As we mentioned in our previous posts, we don’t just toss you the keys and shout "Good luck!" You’ll get a full safety briefing and tuition.
The Mission: Learn how to start the engine, steer without zig-zagging too much, and — crucially — how to make the boat stop.
The Vibe: Relaxed. Grab a coffee if you have time. Meet your boat. Name your boat (unofficially, of course).
09:30 AM: Setting Sail (At a Blistering 3mph)
This is the moment of truth. You cast off the ropes, nudge the throttle forward, and you are officially beginning your Grand Union Canal day out.
The first 20 minutes are usually the "Wobbly Phase." You may oversteer. You will convince yourself that the boat has a mind of its own. You might aim for a bridge and end up uncomfortably close to a willow tree.
Don’t worry. By 10:00 AM, something clicks. You’ll realise that slow and steady wins the race, and you’ll settle into the rhythm of the Grand Union.
10:30 AM: Cruise & Spot Wildlife
Now you’re a pro (sort of). This is the best time of day on a narrowboat. The engine is chugging quietly, the sun is (hopefully) shining, and the countryside is drifting by.
Keep an eye out for: Herons standing like statues on the bank, swans demanding snacks (they are very bossy), and other boaters giving you a friendly wave.
The Golden Rule: If you see a fisherman, slow down to "tick-over." If you don’t, he might shake his fist at you. It’s a canal tradition.
12:30 PM: The Lunch Dilemma (Pub vs Restaurant vs Picnic)
You have three lunch options, and all are excellent.
Option A: Waterside Pub
Option B: Local Restaurant
Option C: Onboard Picnic
Onboard Picnic is our personal favourite. Find a quiet stretch of countryside, moor up against the grassy bank, and break out the sandwiches.
The Perk: You have the best view in England, and it’s completely private. Plus, you have a galley (kitchen) on board to make a fresh brew.
2:00 PM: Turning Around at a "Winding Hole"
When hiring a narrowboat for the day, you’ll travel out for a few hours before heading back to Cow Roast Marina. You can’t simply do a U-turn anywhere—the canal isn't wide enough.
You need to find a Winding Hole.
What is it? A widened section of the canal marked with signs specifically for turning.
How to do it: Stick the nose of the boat into the winding hole, put the tiller hard over, and let the back of the boat swing around.
Pro Tip: If you mess it up and it takes five minutes, just wave at anyone watching. Pretend you meant to do that.
2:30 PM: The Relaxed Return Cruise
Heading back to the Cow Roast Marina is always different from the way out. Why? Because now you are a team.
Uncle Dave is on the bow looking for logs in the water.
Mum is making tea.
You are steering with one hand, looking casually cool.

This is the most relaxing part of your narrowboat day hire itinerary. The nerves are gone, and you can just enjoy the incredible engineering of the canal network.
Slow travel. No traffic. Just water and sky.
4:30 PM: The Soft Landing
You arrive back at the Cow Roast Marina. Don't worry about the final parking manoeuvre—our staff will usually be there to catch your ropes and guide you into the berth like a plane landing on an aircraft carrier (but much slower).
You step off the boat feeling slightly wind-swept, smelling of fresh air, and wondering why you don't live on a boat full-time.
Top Tips for Your Itinerary
Don't Over-Plan: You travel at walking pace. Don't try to visit three towns in one day. Pick one destination, go there, and come back.
Check the Map: We will provide you with a map and advice on the best turning points for a day trip. Listen to the briefing—we know where the good pubs are!
Relax: If you’re running late, just call us. The canal is a stress-free zone.
