Family Adventure Days on the Grand Union Canal
Swap crowded theme parks, expensive city attractions, and endless screen time for a genuine family adventure on the Grand Union Canal.
A self-drive narrowboat day hire from Cowroast Marina gives your family a private, floating home for the day. Moving at a gentle 3mph gives you the rare opportunity to simply slow down and genuinely connect as a family. Whether you are planning a school holiday activity, a multi-generational birthday, or just a relaxing weekend escape, it is an experience that caters perfectly to everyone from energetic toddlers to grandparents.
Activities for Every Generation
Unlike fast-paced attractions where families often split up, a canal boat keeps everyone together with something for everyone to enjoy. Throughout your journey, your family can:
-
Take turns steering the boat (under adult supervision, of course!).
-
Work together as a team to operate the historic canal locks (watch our video to see just how easy and fun this is for the kids!).
-
Keep a lookout for ducks, swans, and kingfishers along the scenic route.
-
Moor up for a waterside picnic or a stroll along the towpath.
-
Simply relax in the cabin or on the deck with a cup of tea, enjoying the peaceful Chilterns scenery.
Complete Beginner? You Are in Safe Hands
If you have never driven a boat before, you are not alone - most of our family bookings are complete beginners. You do not need a licence or any previous experience.
Before you set off, our friendly team provides a robust, stress-free training session. We give you a full safety briefing, hands-on boat handling instruction, and guidance on steering and mooring. We will make sure you feel completely confident at the tiller before you cast off, putting your mind entirely at ease.
We also offer a skipper option if you would preferan expert on hand to guide you through the entire day
Designed for Family Safety
We know that keeping children safe around water is a parent's top priority. That is why three of our four narrowboats (Albert, Victoria, and Hay Day) feature a "semi-traditional" stern.
This specific design provides a safe, walled, and enclosed rear deck area. It allows young children (even energetic two-year-olds) to stand securely right next to the driver in the fresh air, protected from the open edges of the boat. We also provide properly fitted life jackets for all passengers, ensuring peace of mind for the whole family.
What's Onboard
Our narrowboats are fully equipped for your day out on the waterways, whether you want to bring your own cost-saving picnic or moor up and eat at a scenic canal-side pub
