First time on a canal boat?
What a day with us is really like
You don't need a licence and you don't need any experience. Before you set off we give you a full handover, and the boats move at walking pace, about 3mph.
If you have a problem on the day, phone us on 07700 166234.
Do you need a licence to drive a narrowboat?
No. Our guide Do you need a licence to hire a narrowboat? has the detail.
What the handover covers
Steering, stopping, mooring and working a lock, on the boat, before you go.
If you'd rather not steer at all, you can add a skipper when you book.

How fast, and how far?
The canal limit is 4mph and 3mph is realistic, so walkers on the towpath often overtake you. A relaxed day covers 6 to 8 miles in total. North to Bulbourne and back is about 6 miles, with no locks.
Locks
Heading north from Cow Roast there are none until Bulbourne. Heading south, Cowroast Lock is a few minutes away; allow 15 to 20 minutes per lock.
Read how canal locks work before you come.

What to bring
Non-slip shoes, layers and a waterproof, sun cream, and a picnic if you're not stopping at a pub. Our packing list has the rest.
