A Proper Catch-Up: A Narrowboat Day Out with Friends Near London

“We should all get together soon.”
Most friendship groups have said it. Then the calendars come out, someone is away, and the plan disappears beneath another fifty messages.
A narrowboat day out with friends near London gives that overdue catch-up a date and a place. From Cow Roast Marina near Tring, you can hire a private boat for up to ten people and spend the day exploring the Grand Union Canal together.
Time to Actually Catch Up
An hour over coffee can disappear before you have heard half the news. On a narrowboat, you have time to settle in.
Bring lunch, make a cup of tea and enjoy the conversation as the canal slips past. You can take turns steering, spot wildlife along the banks or moor up for a leisurely picnic.
The boat is exclusively yours for the day, so your group can relax into its own rhythm. It works just as well for a reunion with old friends as it does for a birthday or an ordinary Saturday that deserves a better plan.
Your First Boat Day Together
You do not need a boating licence or previous experience. Before departure, we provide a full safety briefing and practical tuition to help you feel comfortable with the controls.
Someone will probably appoint themselves captain before you have even reached the marina. Make sure someone else takes responsibility for the biscuits.
For a relaxed cruise, head north towards Bulbourne through the tree-lined Tring Cutting. There are no locks along this stretch, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the journey and stop for lunch.
If your friends fancy working together through locks, head south towards Dudswell or Northchurch. We will help you choose a suitable route during your morning briefing.

Make It an Autumn Catch-Up
October is a lovely excuse to pack a warm jumper, bring something good for lunch and spend a day outdoors together.
Our boats have indoor seating, onboard heating and a galley with a kettle, hob, fridge, crockery and mugs. You can make a hot drink or enjoy lunch inside when you want to warm up.
Keep the food simple: sandwiches, sausage rolls, fruit and a cake to share. Agree who is bringing what beforehand, unless five packets of crisps and no lunch is your group’s usual arrangement.
Bring warm layers, a waterproof jacket and comfortable shoes with good grip so everyone is prepared for changing weather.
An Easy Day Trip from London
Trains from London Euston to Tring can take around 35–40 minutes. From the station, Cow Roast Marina is a short taxi ride or approximately a 25-minute walk along the canal towpath.
You can spend the day on the water and head home that evening, making it an easy escape to fit around busy diaries.
Put a Date in the Group Chat
If your next catch-up is still waiting for “sometime soon”, give it a date.
A private narrowboat day out near London brings everyone together for fresh air, shared food and a proper conversation.
