A canal may look like a permanent ribbon of calm water, but keeping it full requires constant management.
Unlike rivers, canals cannot always rely on water flowing naturally from upstream. Every time a lock operates, water moves downhill. Sunshine causes evaporation, while smaller amounts escape through canal banks and ageing structures.
So, how do canals stay full of water?

Where Does Canal Water Come From?

According to the Canal & River Trust, its waterways are supplied through a network of reservoirs, rivers, streams and groundwater sources.
Some water enters canals naturally or flows downhill from reservoirs. In other places, pumps are needed to lift it to a higher level.
Why Do Canals Lose Water?
Locks are one of the main reasons canals need regular replenishment.
Whenever a lock is filled or emptied, water passes from the higher section into the lower one. The water has not disappeared, but it has left the upper level and continues moving downhill through the canal system.
Water is also lost through evaporation during warm or windy weather, as well as through gradual seepage and occasional leaks.
This makes the highest section of a canal particularly difficult to supply.
What Is a Canal Summit?
A canal climbs through locks until it reaches its highest stretch, known as the summit pound, before descending again.
Think of it as the roof of the canal. Water can flow away through locks in both directions, so the summit requires a reliable supply from reservoirs or pumps.
Cow Roast Marina sits on the Tring Summit of the Grand Union Canal. From here, the canal eventually descends south towards London and north towards Birmingham.

How Do the Tring Reservoirs Feed the Canal?
Near the Grand Union Canal are four reservoirs:
Wilstone Reservoir
Tringford Reservoir
Startop’s End Reservoir
Marsworth Reservoir
Together, they form the Tring Reservoirs. They were originally created to supply the canal and still help keep the Tring Summit full today.
The reservoirs store water collected mainly from local springs. The largest single source is Wendover Spring, whose water travels along the Wendover Arm towards the reservoir system.
Water is then pumped from the reservoirs to the summit pound, replacing water that moves downhill when boats use the locks.
The Canal & River Trust explains that Wilstone Reservoir supplies the summit through a pumping station at Tring. From the summit, water travels through locks and continues along the canal.
The Chalk Beneath Tring Also Helps
The Tring Summit lies above chalk bedrock containing small cracks that hold groundwater. This underground water store is called a chalk aquifer.
Near Cowroast and Northchurch Locks, pumping stations can draw water from boreholes in the chalk and lift it into the canal.
The local water-supply system therefore combines:
Water from springs and rainfall
Storage within the Tring Reservoirs
Groundwater from the chalk aquifer
Pumps that lift water to the summit
Locks that allow water to move downhill
Much of this system was developed more than 200 years ago, although it is still carefully maintained and monitored today.
How Much Water Does the Canal Need?
Far more than most visitors might imagine.
A Canal & River Trust guide states that during the main boating season, approximately four million gallons of water may be required each day to replenish the Tring Summit—around six Olympic-sized swimming pools.
That demand comes from repeated lock operations, evaporation, seepage and the need to maintain a navigable depth.
A lockful of water moves downhill whether the chamber contains one boat or several. Sharing a lock with another boat, when safe and practical, can therefore help reduce unnecessary water use.

How Are Canal Levels Managed?
The Canal & River Trust monitors reservoir storage, rainfall, groundwater, lock usage and water levels.
This information helps its teams decide when to release water, operate pumps or take steps to conserve supplies. Some locations also use back-pumping systems, which return water from below a lock or flight to a higher canal level.
It is a continuous process of collecting, storing, moving and monitoring water.
From Industrial Reservoirs to Wildlife Haven
The Tring Reservoirs were built to serve the canal, but today they also form a 98-hectare nature reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Their open water, reedbeds and wet woodland support herons, great crested grebes, terns and many species of wintering birds. The Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust now recognises the reservoirs as one of southern England’s notable birdwatching locations.
